The Lowdown: Source of knowledge, coffee, and latex underwear.

If the Lesbian and Gay Community Services Center didn't exist, this would be the best thing out there. A Different Light counts books, music, videos, software, posters, art, free movie screenings, chats with authors, a coffee bar and a friendly, helpful staff among it's many offerings. The Barnes and Noble of the queer world, ADL has branches in San Francisco and L.A. as well as in here the heart of Chelsea, which better equips it to stock and find whatever item your little gay heart desires. It's also one of the best places to meet future significant others who can at least read.

The Lowdown: Charming walls filled with latest Q-lit.

This quaint little book shop right next door to the sapphic A Rising Cafe stocks all the standard GLBiTrans fare and provides service with a very cute smile. However, you'll need their large rolling ladder to reach anything of interest. The narrow cubbyhole of a store stacks it's selections higher and higher - it's worth the reach, though.

The Lowdown: Cozy purveyor of queer books.

The store is set up to cater to the wander-around-and-discover type. Hidden treasures abound, like the amazingly complete collection of Broadway and off-Broadway Playbills, in addition to the standard GLBiTrans fare.

The Lowdown: Tiny but loaded queer bookstore.

The Oscar Wilde Memorial Bookshop is always up-to-date with the latest releases, or they can order you anything you want that it's cramped walls don't hold. This tiny store holds it's own against the bigger and more franchised gay and lesbian bookstores. It specializes in detail, like the especially well-stocked women's music section and its historic collection of gay comics. Check out the assortment of humorous pins and stickers with a the queerest of slants.
